Essential Functions
The Director of Educational Technology and Innovation Unit (ETIU) oversees all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the unit, including supervision, management, and professional development of ETIU staff. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Educational Technology, the ETIU Director will manage projects and project teams to ensure the effective selection, design and delivery of innovative educational technology tools and services to support teaching and learning in the MD program community. The Director of the ETIU, in collaboration with the Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE) leadership team, will direct and lead the core missions of the unit. These missions include the design and implementation of active and technologically-enabled pedagogies, the development of efficient and accessible technological and pedagogical instructional design support services, and proactive and constructive communication to faculty, staff and students regarding relevant and impactful changes to instructional technology.
1. Collaborates with education leaders to develop an IT strategy roadmap that informs the ongoing design and implementation of active and technologically enabled pedagogies.
2. Directs the implementation of new and ongoing curriculum mapping and delivery tools, including the development of processes to ensure that MD program data in the curriculum map is up to date, accurate, complete and available to serve internal and external evaluation and assessment needs.
3. Participates in the development and implementation of faculty development programs to support curriculum mapping and effective use of instructional technology.
4. Meets with various internal (OMSE and WUSM) and external (university) stakeholders to assess educational technology needs, opportunities and challenges; report to leadership and ETIU team.
5. Manages ETIU staff. Responsible for communicating job expectations, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results, and providing formal annual performance reviews which include a career development planning element.
6. Directs ETIU project teams to ensure effective implementation of IT infrastructure and support services.
7. Oversees the development of process training materials and tutorials, including ensuring the ongoing updating of training materials and documentation.
8. Manages the strategy and content when developing training documents for various stakeholders.
9. Through collaboration with OMSE leadership team, supports and informs decision making when conflicting requirements or processes are identified.
10. Ensures that emergent ETIU-related issues are identified, tracked, reported and resolved in a timely manner.
11. Provides ongoing review of the quality of team deliverables to ensure adherence to OMSE standards.
12. Inform the Assistant Dean for Educational Technology and Innovation and OMSE Leadership team, as needed, of any information that will support the timely identification of challenges to project schedules, missed project deliverables, or incomplete tasks.
13. Continue to advance technical and business skill competencies in relevant areas of educational technology by keeping current on evolving systems and business process capabilities.
14. Engage in ongoing professional development by participating in national and local workshops and conferences.
15. Engage in scholarly dissemination of lessons learned, innovations developed, and insights into best practices in the design and implementation of educational technology for the health professions education community.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Undergraduate or graduate degree in Educational Technology, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related area.
Preferred Qualifications
* Terminal degree (Ph.D, Ed.D) in Information Technology, Educational Technology, Computer Science.
* Formal training and/or certification in project management or systems development implementation methodology.
* Expert knowledge in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL , WordPress, LTI and API.
* Ten or more years of related experience working with educational technology and administrative information systems, preferably in a university environment.
* Demonstrated proficiency in the development, implementation, and maintenance of educational technology tools and services.
* Technical skills that include a broad-based understanding of web-based technologies, common operating systems (Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android), IT development tools and platforms including HTML and CSS.
* Advanced knowledge of business/project analysis approaches.
* Management experience with organizational process improvement.
* Project management experience, including ability to assign and monitor available resources, in landscape with multiple competing projects underway.
* Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
* Effective team-collaboration skills.
Salary Range
The hiring range for this position is $68,577 - $89,190 annually.
